Malik Winfield was taken into custody Thursday for Racing on Highway Causing Death in connection to the death of Braydon Shockley, who was killed in a crash on the 4300 block of Pine Street in February 2024.
Court documents state that just prior to the crash, Winfield, Shockley, and a third motorcyclist were traveling down Pine Street at a high rate of speed. Witnesses describe the bikes passing each other and speeding to catch back up.
The documents also reveal officers reviewed surveillance footage from nearby businesses and learned that the motorcyclists were, “traveling at speeds well in excess of other traffic and in the close proximity to each other indicating that they were comparing the relative speeds or power of acceleration of their respective vehicles.”
Eventually, the documents state Winfield’s and Shockely’s bikes collided, causing Shockley to crash into a sign. He died on scene from his injuries.
Winfield now remains held in the Taylor County Jail on a $75,000 bond.
