UPDATE: Suspect accused of firing shots at officers during chase from Abilene to Albany identified

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – A suspect accused of firing shots at officers during a chase from Abilene to Albany Tuesday has been identified.

Michael Zachery Haley was booked into the Shackelford County Jail on four counts of Attempted Capital Murder, Aggravated Robbery, and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon in connection to the incident.

The Abilene Police Department says officers initially attempted to follow Haley because they recognized him as a fugitive with an outstanding warrant, so they requested assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Once DPS Troopers attempted to stop Haley, police say he initiated a high-speed chase, during which he fired shots at officers.

The chase ended with a manhunt after Haley fled on foot when he crashed in Albany near the Shackelford County Sheriff’s Office off Baird Street.

Albany ISD, as well as other businesses and residences in the area, were on a soft lockdown as a precaution while law enforcement worked to apprehend Haley.

No one, including any officers, was injured during the chase or subsequent manhunt and arrest.

Haley remains held in the Shackelford County Jail on bonds totaling more than $6 million.
