On January 26, around 9:22 p.m., emergency crews responded to a collision on Judge Ely Boulevard. The Abilene Police Department (APD) determined that a 65-year-old man, traveling west on his electric mobility scooter, was crossing Judge Ely Boulevard when an SUV hit him.
The Abilene Police Department’s Traffic Division investigated and found that the pedestrian was crossing outside a crosswalk in a poorly lit area. He wore dark clothing, and his scooter lacked lights or reflective materials suitable for nighttime visibility. The SUV driver, heading south on Judge Ely Boulevard, was unable to see the pedestrian due to the low lighting conditions.
The Abilene Police Department confirmed that no citations will be issued in this incident. They also reminded the community to “utilize crosswalks at intersections and to wear bright, reflective clothing when out at night.”
The man sustained severe injuries to his leg and head and was transported to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a metroplex facility for further treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
