The DA’s office says Eugene Roebuck III, 24, of Fresno was sentenced to probation for two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated on Friday. He pled to the charges on June 6, 2024.
According to officials, on Sept. 3, 2022, at just before 6 a.m. on Highway 99, a witness observed Roebuck weaving through traffic at extreme rates of speed. He then made an unsafe lane change in front of another vehicle, colliding with its front-left end and sending it off the road where it crashed into a tree.
The DA’s office says, the 20-year-old male driver and the 18-year-old female passenger, both of Mendota, died in the crash. The woman was also pregnant at the time.
According to a California Highway Patrol investigation at the time, Roebuck’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.08% about two hours after the crash, and he was traveling at 115 mph prior to the crash.
Initially, the DA says Roebuck faced a maximum sentence of 12 years in state prison, but then he was granted probation. A judge also ordered him to serve an additional 10 days in jail. The sentence was handed down over the objections of the District Attorney’s Office and the family members of the victims, who were present in court for the sentencing.
