Chuy's breaks ground on first restaurant in Abilene
ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Chuy’s Tex-Mex has finally broken ground on their first-ever location in Abilene.

As of mid-January, foundation and groundwork has begun where the restaurant will be located outside the Mall of Abilene on the 4100 block of S. Clack Street.

It will cost an estimated $3 million to construct a full-service, 7,195 sq. ft commercial restaurant at the location, according to a permit filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The project should be complete by September 2025.

Chuy’s opened its first restaurant in Austin, Texas, in 1982. Read their origin story below:

Chuy’s opened on April 16, 1982 in an old, abandoned Texas Barbeque joint on iconic Barton Springs Road in Austin, TX. There was seating for about sixty, a women’s restroom the size of a broom closet and a men’s restroom that was, well, outside. Founders Mike Young and John Zapp had a vision of a fun and funky Tex-Mex restaurant that served authentic and fresh food in an atmosphere that appealed to everyone. From these humble beginnings Chuy’s was born.
