The following is a news release from Fremont County Search and Rescue.

ISLAND PARK — Fremont County Search and Rescue responded to a call for assistance late Tuesday afternoon after a group of snowmobilers from Ohio became stranded in the Black Canyon area near Island Park.

At approximately 5:47 p.m., FCSAR was notified that the Ohio snowmobiling group had broken down in a remote area. The rental company from West Yellowstone was sent out and attempted to assist, but ultimately called FCSAR for help when the situation required further assistance.

The individuals were located at approximately 7:15 p.m. by FCSAR personnel. Due to challenging terrain, FCSAR members rode as close as possible to the stranded snowmobilers before proceeding on foot for the remainder of the distance. All members of the group were safely located and assisted.

The stranded snowmobilers were assessed and ensured to be in good health before being escorted out of the backcountry.

FCSAR commended the individuals for their initial efforts and quick thinking in contacting search and rescue services. FCSAR reminds the public to be cautious when venturing into remote areas during the winter months and to carry proper gear, communication devices, and knowledge of the terrain.
