Officer Daniel Henning, who was serving as the School Resource Officer at Craig Middle School, died Wednesday, January 15, after a battle with Ocular Melanoma.
The Abilene Police Department released the following information on Officer Henning’s life, family, and career in light of his passing:
Officer Henning began his career with the Arlington Police Department and was soon promoted to Patrol Sergeant. He served in Arlington for ten years before leaving in 2010 to perform mission work in Nicaragua.
In 2012, he joined the Abilene Police Department, where he met his wife, Aymee, who serves as the Police Records Division Manager.
Throughout his career, Officer Henning served on Patrol, as a Police Training Officer, and was selected as a School Resource Officer in 2020. He brought joy and laughter to many students and was known for his extensive Star Wars and police patch collections, proudly displayed in his office.
His larger-than-life personality touched everyone who interacted with him, and he was deeply committed to bridging the gap between officers and the youth of Abilene.
In 2022, Officer Henning’s son, Luke (24), followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Abilene Police Department to serve alongside him. Daniel was also the proud father of two beautiful daughters, Jade (23), NICU nurse, married to Alex Borchert, and Katelyn (4), future CEO or Lady Boss.
Officer Henning spent his final days surrounded by his family, friends, and brothers and sisters in blue.
We mourn the loss of Officer Henning, whose profound impact on the Abilene community will never be forgotten.
Funeral arrangements for Officer Henning have not been made public at this time.
