Ladies and gentlemen, Tony Kent.
It’s no secret that Cody Cannon has a great voice as he is the frontman for the rocking East Texas-based band Whiskey Myers. But did you know he’s not the only one on stage with a killer set of pipes?
In fact, if you are a fan of the song “Bitch” then you are listening to John Jeffers, their lead guitar player, on vocals. The band is filled with so much talent it’s sometimes hard to grasp. One vocalist from the group that I have really been digging into as of late is Tony Kent, who you can find on percussion, cowbell, and keys.
Over the summer, when the group was at sound check before their Red Rocks show, Kent laid down a stellar cover of the Tears For Fears hit, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World.” His rendition occupied my mind for months after I stumbled across the video. The change of pace sound-wise was so refreshing, as it was a complete 180 from their country rock persona, but Kent’s vocals captivated me, and his sound transported me back in time. I truly believe he would have been an ’80s sensation.

Over the weekend, my theory was further proven, and they took the stage in Dallas, Texas. The packed Dos Equis Pavillion was filled with Whiskey Myers fans, friends, and family as many supporters came in from East Texas to watch their “homecoming” show.
During their set, they took a break from rocking out and gave Tony Kent the leading mic, firing up Jackson Browne’s “Running On Empty.”
Browne’s hit single, released in 1978, is one of his signature songs. It’s a classic, especially if you are into the sound of music from the late ’70s and early ’80s. Browne wrote the song while driving to the studio daily to make The Pretender and felt like he was going nonstop (literally and figuratively).
“I was always driving around with no gas in the car. I just never bothered to fill up the tank because — how far was it anyway? Just a few blocks.”
Kent ate up this cover. It’s shocking how similar Kent sounds to Jackson Browne when performing this song. His vocals have a little more depth and richness, but each note is spot-on, and the delivery between the two singers is very similar. Cannon and Jeffers help Kent with the backup vocals, and the combination of their three voices on this is pure magic.
“Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe I don’t know about anyone, but me If it takes all night, that’ll be all right If I can get you to smile before I leaveI genuinely have not stopped thinking about this cover since witnessing it. I am officially starting a petition for Tony Kent to cut “Running On Empty” and “Everyone Wants To Rule The World” in the studio.
I need more of this ASAP.
