Volunteers prepare for winter & craft care packs for Big Country students

Volunteers prepare for winter & craft care packs for Big Country students
ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Since 2019, Abilene’s Love and Care Ministries has hosted assembly nights on the first and second Mondays and Tuesdays of each month.

Volunteers from all walks of life were given a task and put to the test, assembling thousands of snack packs to be distributed to Big Country students experiencing homelessness or nutritional difficulty in 10 different area school districts.

“We try to make it fun. We’ve got the music, we’ve got a lot of activity going on. We do not keep people past that hour no matter what’s going on.” Said Love & Care Director of Ministry, Terry Davis.

On Tuesday, January 7, volunteers like Shawnte Fleming took about 45 minutes to put together about 3,400 of those packs. Though this was her first time volunteering for this project, she says she was pleasantly surprised at its swift and efficient operation.

“We’re all strangers, but we’re all coming together for this great cause. This is what it means to look out for other residents right here, and I love this. I’m so glad I came out tonight.” Fleming said.

Davis attributes the ease of operation to the simplicity of the process and newcomers’ assistance from former volunteers.

“The bags come; you put the item in the bag and pass it on. A person could have never done it before, and they’ll be here maybe two, three minutes and go, oh, this is not hard to do at all.” Davis said.

Experienced employees like Cody Wheeler help that process move smoothly. Wheeler joined Love & Care in November, participating in about nine events, give or take. However, only recently did he discover that the program had impacted his life long before then.

“I didn’t know that this is where those care packs my son received came from. God’s got a plan for everything, brother.” Wheeler said.

His young son was also present Tuesday night. This was his third time helping with the event, and Healer added that he is proud that his son is taking on such a kind task.

“It fills my heart knowing that we’re at least guiding him in the right direction.” Said Wheeler.

The Love & Care Ministries website has information and links to donate if you want to volunteer an hour or contribute financially to the mission. The over 3,000 packs assembled Tuesday night will be distributed to 10 school districts across the Big Country. Once there, district staff will hand them out to students needing nutritional assistance over the weekend.
