From being honored on the Senate floor by Senator Ted Cruz for her political career to making a significant impact through her involvement with organizations such as Hendrick Home for Children, The Development Corporation of Abilene, and the Texas Mission of Mercy, Shea’s contributions are vast.
Since moving to Abilene in 1995, Shea has consistently given back to the community that embraced her, from serving as the West Texas Regional Director for 26 years to dedicating her free time to supporting non-profits. Surprised and deeply grateful, she is humbled by this recognition.
“My job allowed me the opportunities to meet a lot of people and get involved with a lot of things. All of them over the years, since 1995, have meant so much to me. I love everything. I moved here for a job and stayed here because of my heart,” explained Hall.
Hall also volunteers with the Dancing with the Abilene Stars fundraiser, where all proceeds go to the Hendrick Home for Children. Another cause she is passionate about is the Texas Mission of Mercy, which aims to restore confidence to residents facing hardships through the gift of a smile.
“That’s where we turn the civic center into a mash dental service and treat about 1,500 people. We’ve done it three times, and we’re going to do it again,” added Hall.
She has been determined to give back to as many people as possible from a young age.
“My mom was a great lady, and I grew up in the country, a small town, and everybody had to do everything so we could have anything. That’s what I always said,” Hall explained. “There were 63 people in my graduating class, so we all had to play all the sports, or we wouldn’t have had a team. It’s just kind of how I grew up.”
She is always excited to be a part of something that will set up future generations with success and encourages others to give back year-round.
Past recipients of the ‘Abilenian of the Year’ award include Billye Proctor Shaw, Dr. B.J. Estes, and former Mayor Anthony Williams. This marks the 40th year that the award has been presented.
