Abilene stores & nonprofits ramp up efforts to support community needs as cold weather sets in

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – As cold weather sweeps into the Key City, stores and nonprofits are bracing for the surge in clients they anticipate, stepping up their preparations to meet the increased demand.

Drug Emporium store manager Travis Hill shared that whenever winter weather approaches, he ensures the store is stocked with essential items like water and toilet paper to meet customers’ needs during the colder months.

“Obviously, any time we have cold weather, we have a little uptick on that. People are concerned about being stuck in their houses. So, we’ll see an uptick in sales of water, bread, and milk, things of that nature. So, we’re seeing that a little bit of that today,” Hill said.

At the Salvation Army, these same essential items are in high demand to support those in need. Kitchen supervisor Teresa Harden mentioned that, with the expected increase in clientele—nearly double the usual numbers—they are calling on the community for support to ensure they can continue to serve effectively.

“It takes anywhere from 10 to 12 dozen eggs just to serve one breakfast here, and [four dozen] is all the eggs I have,” Harden said. “Currently, we serve anywhere from 50 to 75 [people]. I’m sure we’re going to be way over the 100 mark. So, it’s going to take extra food. But whatever it takes, we’re going to make sure we take care of our people here.”

The Salvation Army is extending its support this winter by providing blankets, coats, and additional space for those seeking warmth. Captain Joshua McKain anticipates welcoming between 1,200 and 1,400 individuals from Monday through early next week. He added that they’re sharing the load with other local nonprofits to make sure everyone gets the help they need this winter.

“For daytime warming centers, we’re diverting to our other excellent agencies like Love and Care and City Lights, working alongside the Station and City Link, being able to take those individuals to the daytime warming centers Monday through Friday. Then really, they rely on us for evening services like meals, overnight lodging, blankets and coats, and, of course, breakfast,” McKain said.

The nonprofit is actively accepting various donations at its location at 1726 Butternut Street. Items needed include meat, butter, milk, eggs, cases of water, bread, blankets, and coats.
