‘There’s always room to give’: Abilenians spread holiday cheer to those in need

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Christmas Eve morning in Abilene was all about giving back as a group of Abilenians came together to help those experiencing homelessness. Led by Mikaela Davis and Mason Householder, they handed out 50 plates of food, along with clothes and blankets, to keep people warm on a chilly day.

Davis was driving around Abilene one day when she noticed the amount of people and their pets in less fortunate positions. Knowing how it feels to be apart from family on Christmas, she pitched the idea to Householder.

With less than a week before the holiday, Davis also recruited a friend, Selena Cardona, to help with the project. Despite the quick turnaround, Cardona said she’s used to pulling off projects like this on short notice.

“It was very, very, very short notice. But it all works out perfectly because the last time we did it, we did it within two days. We just woke up one day and thought about it. Let’s go feed. It’s hot in the summer; let’s go feed everybody,” Cardona recalled.

Determined to make Davis’ idea come to life, Householder reached out to anyone who could help. He said it’s a small but meaningful way to show appreciation and spread a little holiday cheer.

“Today, we are serving food to the homeless. Those in less fortunate positions in life. We go to them directly and just show them how Abilene loves them,” Householder said. “I called [Davis] and asked her, ‘Hey, what are you seeing? What’s what are you thinking? What’s your idea?’ And she came up with the idea of, ‘Hey, I want to feed these individuals. I want to help them and show that they’re loved during this time of season when we can typically spend time with family.'”

On Tuesday morning, Householder, Davis, Cardona and other community members came together to distribute 50 plates of food, along with clothes and blankets, to help those in need stay warm in the chilly weather.

Cardona brought her son and his best friend along, hoping to teach them the true meaning of Christmas through the act of giving back.

“I think that these kids see, and a lot of other kids just see the same thing. Be grateful for what you have. Absolutely. And giving, there’s always room to give no matter what,” Cardona said.
