On December 4, the Sweetwater Police Department received a letter from a student at Sweetwater Intermediate School that read, “Dear policeman, I need your help. The Grinch is trying to steal Christmas and there are wanted posters everywhere at school.”

Officers also received reports that the Grinch was spotted attempting to steal Christmas and the school’s elves on the shelves. Officers and K9 Dasha dashed into action and apprehended the Grinch.
He was taken into custody at the Sweetwater Police Department while law enforcement worked to locate the missing elves. Students have also written letters to the Grinch to persuade him to change his heart and show kindness.
On December 17, the Grinch made another attempt at Merkel Elementary School, this time trying to steal letters. However, after reading the heartfelt messages from the students in Sweetwater, he decided against stealing Christmas and instead had some festive fun with the kids.

Just three days later, the Grinch struck again in Taylor County, attempting once more to steal Christmas. He now faces charges of attempted holiday theft, disturbing the peace, and breaking and entering (into people’s hearts).

“The Grinch is reportedly “green with envy” over all the Christmas joy he’s missing out on. Let’s hope he learns the true meaning of Christmas!” the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office posted online.
And so, the Grinch’s holiday hijinks continue across the Big Country, but with a twist! It seems that even the Grinch is no match for the kindness and holiday spirit of our local students and law enforcement. Whether it’s writing letters or catching him in the act, it’s clear that the Grinch has met his match in the hearts of our community. Will he truly learn the meaning of Christmas, or is he just in it for the mischief? Only time will tell. For now, it looks like Christmas in the Big Country is safe… for the moment!
