Abilene community invited to honor Army Veteran at unaccompanied burial

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Texas Veterans Land Board is extending an invitation to the community to attend the unaccompanied burial of U.S. Army Veteran Sergeant Donald Lee Mikel at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, ensuring no Veteran is laid to rest alone.

Born on November 10, 1945, Sergeant Mikel served in the Army from August 1967 to June 1970. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, recognizing his dedication and honorable conduct.

As Sergeant Mikel has no known next of kin, the Texas Veterans Land Board is encouraging the public to honor his memory by attending the ceremony. He will be laid to rest with full military honors.

The burial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, 7457 West Lake Road.
