ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Alyssa Resendez died in 2023 from heart problems, and while her family thought they could lay her to rest at the Abilene Municipal Cemetery, her grandmother, Dora, arrived to find her casket in the wrong lot.

Dora said she wanted to be buried next to her grandfather, so she gave her space to her granddaughter next to him.

“That’s my only grandbaby that I had, and she’s got sick. She needed a heart transplant, and It didn’t work out for her, so she passed away,” Dora said.

Once Dora saw the first mistake, she brought it up with the worker to find where it had started. She said they told her she was moved due to insufficient space in the desired spot.

“I had a fit out there, and the funeral people said, ‘Let me see what’s going on.’ because they knew she was supposed to be over here,” Dora said. “The guys from the cemetery came and said, ‘no, that there wasn’t enough space here, so we’re going just to put her here.”

The cemetery fixed their mistake of moving Alyssa to the correct spot, which Dora said brought up the old emotions all over again.

“I had to go through that experience all over again where they had to dig up, and they put her right here next to her grandpa. You know, I could see my husband’s casket and everything,” Dora said.

Over a year later, the family is dealing with another issue at the cemetery, this time with the headstone. Jose, a family friend, said they arrived to find the headstone in the wrong spot.

“When they put the headstone back on there, they put it in the wrong spot where she was buried. Now, you know, if that was your child, what would you do?” Jose said.

The cemetery made a plan with the family on Wednesday to move the headstone to its rightful place, moving it on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, December 11, the cemetery made a plan with the family to move the headstone to its rightful place, and it was finally moved on Thursday Morning, December 12.

The Resendez family told KTAB/KRBC they are sharing their story to ensure that it doesn’t get repeated as they finally gain closure with their granddaughter, Alyssa.
