Wednesday (2/21) sports viewership: Kentucky-LSU tops night

On a customarily quiet Wednesday night, it was SEC college basketball that topped the sports ratings charts.

Wednesday’s Kentucky-LSU men’s college basketball game averaged 1.01 million viewers on ESPN, up 21% from North Carolina-Notre Dame in the same window last year (842K). (Compared to Kentucky-Florida in an earlier window last year, viewership was virtually flat at 1.01 million.)

The Tigers’ one-point win delivered the top sports audience of the day. The Duke-Miami lead-in ranked second at 697,000 viewers, but the Blue Devils’ 29-point rout declined 31% from last year’s aforementioned Kentucky-Florida game.

In the same early window on ESPN2, Alabama’s overtime win over Florida averaged 624,000 viewers — more-than-tripling Temple-Cincinnati a year ago (171K). Mississippi-Mississippi State followed with 271,000, down 54% from last year’s Alabama-South Carolina matchup (595K).

Across the four ESPN and ESPN2 windows, viewership increased 6% from the same night last year (from 626K to 662K).

In other college action, BTN drew 420,000 for Nebraska-Indiana (+23%), preceded by Illinois-Penn State at 329,000. FS1 drew 135,000 for St. John’s-Georgetown, 94,000 for DePaul-Marquette and just 79,000 for UNLV-Air Force.

Moving beyond the hardwood, TNT averaged 387,000 for Flyers-Blackhawks and 288,000 for Bruins-Oilers in an NHL regular season doubleheader. Both games comfortably topped last year’s solo Blackhawks-Stars matchup (194K).

Rounding out the day’s slate, USA Network averaged 302,000 for a Luton Town-Liverpool English Premier League match.
