Police in Southern California shoot man in stolen SUV he drove at them, authorities say

A stolen vehicle suspect was in critical condition after a police shooting in which he also hit multiple police cars, drove directly toward officers and crashed into a drainage ditch in Azusa Friday, Oct. 22, authorities said.

A 28-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the stolen SUV, was injured as a result of the crash and was also hospitalized, said Deputy Miguel Meza of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, who was assisting in the investigation.

Azusa police received information about the stolen SUV and found it in a parking lot with the suspects inside about 4:50 p.m., Meza said.

The man, 25, drove away as officers approached and he hit multiple police cars, Meza said. He then accelerated toward officers and at least one fired at the suspect in response.

The suspect then went eastbound on Azusa Lane, near Azusa Avenue, but lost control and ran through a chain-link fence and into a drainage wash, with the car landing on the driver’s side, Meza said.

Azusa police arrested the suspect and detained the woman before they were taken to a hospital, Meza said.

The man was shot at least once, Meza said.

Police found a firearm in the area of the SUV, Meza said. No officers were injured.
