Oakland police seek ID of suspects in retired police captain’s robbery, ex-cop killed suspected robber

OAKLAND — Police here have released the picture of a Nissan Sentra believed to be related to the Thursday afternoon in which a retired police captain was shot after fatally shooting a man suspected of robbing him at a gas station.

The Thursday afternoon incident is still under investigation. Surveillance footage shows three men approach retired police Captain Ersie Joyner III, who is seen pumping gas at a Chevron station on 1700 Castro Street in Oakland. As the robbers break from Joyner, he pulls a pistol and opens fire, fatally shooting one of the men.

A few moments later, Joyner is shot several times in a gunfire exchange with another one of the suspected robbers, who flee in the Nissan. Joyner remains in critical but stable condition.

Social media posts have identified the man killed as a Vallejo rapper who uses the stage name Lil Theze, but his name has not been released by authorities.

Oakland police released a picture Saturday afternoon of the black, four-door 2007 Nissan Sentra with tinted windows, custom rims, and a San Francisco 49er’s license plate frame. The California license plate number is 6ATC357.

Police are encouraging anyone with information on the vehicle to call investigators at 510-238-3821, or 510-238-3278.
