Walnut Creek: Two arrested, gun recovered after fracas at Cheesecake Factory

WALNUT CREEK — A San Francisco man and woman were arrested on suspicion of several charges after a weapon brandishing during a weekend fight at a chain restaurant, authorities said Monday.

Around 5 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to reports of a man with a gun at The Cheesecake Factory, 1181 Locust Street, and arrived in time to detain several people, according to a police statement in a Monday evening social-media post.

Preliminary investigation found that during a fight among several customers, a 20-year-old San Francisco man brandished a gun registered to a 21-year-old San Francisco woman.

Both the man and woman were arrested on suspicion of several charges, including conspiracy to commit a crime, carrying a loaded firearm in a public place and assault with a deadly weapon.

A search of the premises yielded a bag containing a loaded Glock handgun with two extra magazines and a wallet belonging to one of the two hidden in a water fountain beside the table where they had been sitting, police said.

Although county records show the two were initially booked into Martinez county jail without bond, the woman managed to post bail around 4 a.m., while the man did so around 1:20 p.m..

Despite a police statement claim that crime rates had been consistent over the last five years, new Walnut Creek Police Chief Jamie Knox acknowledged several recent high-profile incidents: “We understand that even a few incidents can be disturbing. That’s why our Police Department has stepped up downtown patrols recently during weekends, increasing visibility and enhancing public safety.”
