The mandatory evacuation for the KNP Complex wildfires has been extended west, toward Three Rivers.
The KNP Complex comprises the Paradise and Colony fires, ignited by lightning on Sept. 9. As of Tuesday evening, Paradise was 4,821 acres (7½ square miles) and Colony 1,040 acres (1.6 square miles). They are less than 2 miles apart.
The larger fire has crossed the Generals Highway and the middle fork of the Kaweah River near Sequoia National Park’s Potwisha and Buckeye Flat campgrounds.
The park’s services and facilities are closed — roads, campgrounds, lodges and visitor centers — and all wilderness permits have been canceled.
To the north, Kings Canyon National Park remains open, but the road between the two parks is closed.
The evacuation zone is indicated on the map above in orange. The community of Three Rivers is under a warning.
