SF Giants can make franchise history with win vs. Padres

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants franchise has been around for 139 years and has made the postseason 26 times. But they’ve never clinched a spot in the National League playoffs with more than two weeks left in the regular season.

They had a chance Monday, as a victory over the San Diego Padres at Oracle Park would put San Francisco into the playoffs with 20 days and 18 games left. The Cincinnati Reds, who are in third place in the NL Wild Card standings, can reach a maximum of 93 wins this season. San Francisco entered Monday with a 93-50 record.

The Giants entered Monday on a seven-game win streak, and with a 2 1/2 game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West.
