Arrests made in killing of Oakland high school football star

OAKLAND – Two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a Skyline High School football player nearly a year ago in East Oakland, police said Friday.

Aaron Pryor, 16, was found shot just after 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 27, 2020, on the 5800 block of Elizabeth Street, according to the Oakland Police Department. He died of his injuries at the scene.

Police on Friday announced the arrests, but did not release any information about the suspects.

“Officers have been working diligently over the last 11 months in order to bring some justice to Mr. Pryor’s family,” said Oakland police Lt. Frederick Shavies in a video posted to Facebook.

The cases have been presented to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for charging, Shavies said.

Aaron had dreams of playing in the National Football League, his mother Tiffany Winters wrote in a GoFundMe campaign last year. In a previous interview with this news organization, Skyline head football coach Joe Bates described the teen as a “superstar athlete” and “extremely motivated.”

“He would send direct messages on Instagram to say ‘hey, coach, I know I’m not a captain, but I just want to let you know I’m coming for that captain role,’” Bates said. “He’d also send group-chat messages to team members to motivate them for local park workouts. He took on roles and had high expectations.”

Anyone with information related to the case can contact the OPD Homicide Section at 510-238-3821.
