Ex-Oakland teacher gets two years for visiting child-pornography websites

OAKLAND — A former Oakland teacher has begun serving a two-year federal prison term for a child pornography conviction, six weeks after he was formally sentenced, court records show.

Scott Long, 50, was charged with accessing child pornography with intent to view last January. He was formally sentenced in late June after pleading guilty, and given until Wednesday to turn himself in.

Prosecutors wrote in court records that Long accessed two child pornography websites more than 150 times from December 2019 to June 2020. They lauded him for agreeing to plead guilty quickly and immediately resigning from his teaching job.

“This conduct is particularly troubling given the defendant’s previous employment as an educator, in which position he worked with children not much younger than those depicted in the images he accessed,” assistant U.S. Attorney Samantha Bennett wrote in a sentencing memo. Neither the memo nor the charging records say where Long worked as a teacher.

Long’s defense attorney wrote in a sentencing memo, “Mr. Long is remorseful for the harm he has caused, both to the victims depicted in the pictures he viewed, as well as to his family, who are devastated.”

Long will serve three years of supervised release after his prison sentence.
