Alameda: Vehicle breaches Coast Guard Island checkpoint

ALAMEDA — A vehicle apparently breached a Coast Guard Island security checkpoint, briefly entering and then exiting the base, authorities said Thursday.

Just before 3:15 p.m., a vehicle drove across the Dennison Street bridge and into the island base from the 2100 block of Oakland’s Embarcadero East, Coast Guard Petty Officer Taylor Bacon said.

Security staff pursued the vehicle until it left the base by driving back across the bridge. Soon after, Alameda police took up pursuit of the vehicle, Bacon said.

No details of the vehicle or driver, how long the vehicle stayed on base or on any possible checkpoint damage were initially available. Bacon said there were no reported injuries and that Coast Guard investigative services personnel were working with Alameda police who will lead an investigation.

An Alameda Police patrol commander did not immediately return a call or e-mail requesting additional information.
