SANTA CLARA — The first 49ers-issued depth chart is out, and as unofficial as they’re supposed to be, there aren’t many surprises.
Jimmy Garoppolo remains the first-string quarterback, which makes sense because, beside his past seasons, he’s taken every first-team snap in training camp except one, which was a designed run by rookie Trey Lance, the QB2. Nate Sudfeld and Josh Rosen are listed as third-team equals, for now.
Perhaps the only eye-opening item is that starting wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is also listed as the first-string punt returner, a role he wants but one that coaches will debate on whether to expose him to injury at that hazardous job.
