SAN JOSE — A man walking on King Road was hit and killed by a driver who fled the scene early Sunday, adding to a grim streak of pedestrian deaths in the city and also hit-and-run collisions, authorities said.
The victim was walking between crosswalks on northbound King Road near Story Road around 12:45 a.m. when an unidentified driver hit him and then left the area, according to San Jose police.
The man died at the scene; his name was not publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
Police did not immediately provide any details on the driver or car in the collision, and in a news release stated that “investigators are gathering information and working on identifying the unknown vehicle.”
The crash marked the city’s 35th traffic death of the year and the 14th involving a pedestrian. According to data compiled by this news organization, it was also the seventh fatal hit-and-run case investigated by San Jose police in 2021, and the fourth pedestrian death in less than two weeks.
