SF Giants’ Buster Posey exits with injury in series finale against Diamondbacks

PHOENIX — Buster Posey was in the midst of another excellent performance when he departed Sunday’s series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks after taking a foul tip off his left hand.

Posey was behind the plate in the sixth inning when Arizona Diamondbacks pinch-hitter Daulton Varsho fouled an Anthony DeSclafani pitch off of Posey’s glove that appeared to injury the catcher’s thumb.

The Giants’ franchise cornerstone received immediate attention from trainer Dave Groeschner and manager Gabe Kapler and attempted to stay in the game, but after catching one more pitch from DeSclafani, Posey left his crouch, walked over to the dugout and departed for the visitor’s clubhouse.

The exact injury Posey suffered isn’t clear, but any significant injury would leave the Giants without another important catalyst in a lineup that’s already without third baseman Evan Longoria (shoulder) and first baseman Brandon Belt (knee).

Backup catcher Curt Casali replaced Posey in the game and is the only other catcher on the team’s 26-man roster. If Posey’s injury requires him to be placed on the injured list, the Giants can recall top prospect Joey Bart or Chadwick Tromp from Triple-A Sacramento.
