Two wildfires that started Wednesday afternoon near Lake Shasta prompted evacuations because of their rapid spread.
The Salt Fire began around 2 p.m. east of Interstate 5 near the Salt Creek Road exit. Around 6 p.m., its size was estimated at 200 acres.
- Evacuations were ordered for Zola Drive, Cordes Court, Solus Campground Road and Old Mill Road and for the Lakehead area east of I-5 between Antler Road and Riverview Drive.
- Two lanes of northbound I-5 were closed in the area of the fire.
The Wonderland Fire began shortly before 6 p.m. in the community of Mountain Gate.
- Evacuations were ordered for Tunnel Road and Bass Drive. Around 7:30 p.m., the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said the fire’s progress had been stopped.

The Shasta County fires are about 50 miles south of the Lava and Tennant fires, which have burned more than 25,000 acres in Siskiyou County northeast of Weed.
