MOUNTAIN VIEW – A 37-year-old transient man was arrested on suspicion of setting a fire Monday morning in Mountain View, authorities said.
The fire was reported at 9:30 a.m. in a parking lot on South Rengstorff Avenue just south of Stanford Avenue, the Mountain View Police Department said in a news release.
Firefighters arrived to find a man sitting near a small fire. They summoned police when he refused to move out of the way.
Witnesses, meanwhile, identified the man as the person who started the fire, police said.
When officers tried to detain the man, he hit one in the face with his knee, police said. The man was eventually arrested and booked into Santa Clara County jail on charges of arson and assault on an officer.
Police said the man is a suspect in two other arson cases, which remain under investigation. One was reported in May and the other on June 16.
