Suspect in Fremont sexual assault, attempt arrested

FREMONT — A homeless Hayward man is in jail after his arrest as a suspect in a sexual assault and a separate sex-assault attempt Thursday, authorities said.

Officers responded to a call around 11 a.m. about a possible problem near Grimmer Boulevard and Blacow Road, and arrived to find the 28-year-old man assaulting a 67-year-old woman, police said in a statement Thursday evening.

After stopping the attack and detaining the man, the woman was taken to a trauma center for treatment of injuries, police said. Soon after, the man was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of sexual assault, elder abuse and battery.

Soon after, officers learned that a 57-year-old woman was walking earlier Thursday morning near Fremont Boulevard and Auto Mall Parkway when a man punched her, pushed her to the ground and attempted to sexually assault her.

But the man, who police said they had later identified as the same assault suspect, fled after a witness scared him off.

Detectives with the department’s crimes-against-persons unit are handling the case and plan to make information public “as it becomes available and with consideration to the victims,” police said in part.
