San Mateo: Car chase ends in recovery of stolen mail

SAN MATEO – A police pursuit through two Bay Area counties over the weekend ended in the recovery of stolen mail and the capture of two suspects, authorities said.

The chase started about 1:50 a.m. Saturday when officers tried to stop a black 2013 Kia for an unspecified vehicle code violation at Concar Drive and South Delaware Street in San Mateo, the San Mateo Police Department said in a news release.

Officers determined the registered owner of the car, a 39-year-old San Jose woman, had a warrant for identity theft and was a person of interest in a mail theft, police said.

Police said the car drove away at a “high rate of speed” and got onto southbound Highway 101.

California Highway Patrol officers joined the pursuit and used a spike strip to disable the car near San Antonio Road in Palo Alto, said police, adding that the car came to a stop near Central Expressway.

Police said the occupants, the registered owner and a 32-year-old San Jose man, ran from the car but were caught.

Inside the car, officers found numerous pieces of mail that had been stolen in the cities of San Mateo, Santa Clara and San Francisco, as well as a makeshift mail key, police said.

Police said they have forwarded their investigation to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office for “issuance of warrants and prosecution.” The man and woman are expected to be charged with mail theft and conspiracy to commit a crime.
