Atherton’s CiCi Bellis made a winning return on the first day of the U.S. Open on Monday night, beating Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch in three sets in just over two hours, 6-7 (13), 6-3, 6-2.
Bellis had not made an appearance at the U.S. Open since 2017. She made a run to the third round the previous year. Wrist and elbow injuries sidelined Bellis for 18 months, starting in the middle of 2018.
Bellis, ranked 118th in the world, made the third round at the Australian Open in January, then the tennis world shut for the coronavirus pandemic. This is the first major tournament since the shutdown. It is being played without spectators.
Bellis will face the winner of the Anna Blinkova-Jennifer Brady match next. Brady is seeded No. 28 and ranked 42nd in the world.
