SARATOGA – New details have emerged about a fiery crash that left one person dead and five others injured in Saratoga on Wednesday.
The fatal collision, which was reported at the intersection of Saratoga Avenue and Highway 85 about 11:20 a.m., was preceded by a crash on the freeway just south of the northbound off-ramp to Saratoga Avenue, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ross Lee.
Lee said a white Tesla collided with the rear end of a Toyota Sienna on the freeway multiple times, causing the minivan to spin out. The Tesla then traveled down the off-ramp, collided with a gray pickup truck at the intersection and caught fire.
Two occupants of the Tesla and two occupants of the pickup truck were taken to hospitals, three of them with life-threatening injuries. One of the occupants of the Tesla died a short time later. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office on Thursday identified the person who died as David Alan Brown, 75, of Saratoga.
Two other people were treated at the scene for minor injuries and released. They included Raffaella Brunello, the driver of the minivan.
“I thought I would have died,” Brunello said. “I am thankful to the people on the highway that immediately came to help me and stopped the traffic to move my car.”
Brunello said she has pain in her neck and legs, and is awaiting the results of X-rays.
The CHP is investigating the crash on Highway 85 and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the collision at the intersection of Highway 85 and Saratoga Avenue. An update on the investigation into the latter crash was not available Thursday.
Anyone with information about the fatal collision can contact the sheriff’s office traffic investigative division at 408-868-6600.
