Santa Clara County: Firefighters battle Metcalf, Uvas fires

SANTA CLARA COUNTY — Firefighters were responding Sunday afternoon to separate vegetation fires in remote eastern and southern Santa Clara County, authorities said.

Around 4:45 p.m., CalFire crews responded to reports of a grass fire near San Felipe and Metcalf roads, and found a two-acre area in flames. By 6:15 p.m., that fire’s forward progress had been stopped, according to a social-media post.

Around 5 p.m., additional CalFire crews responded to a separate fire near Uvas and Little Uvas roads west-southwest of Morgan Hill. That blaze, known as the Uvas fire, grew to about six acres by 5:45 p.m. with several air tankers and helicopters providing aerial support to firefighters on the ground.

There were no initial reports of any injuries, evacuations or threatened structures. Check back for updates.
