Firefighters battle fast-growing Sites fire in Colusa County

Fire crews are working to evacuate residents near a wind-driven fast-growing vegetation fire in Colusa County that has burned about a thousand acres, authorities said Sunday.

Around 4:30 p.m., CalFire crews responded to a vegetation fire in the 3000 block of Sites Lodoga Road near Squaw Creek Road southeast of Stonyford, and initially advised no evacuations were necessary.

But the fire’s rapid expansion to about 200 acres, driven by moderate winds, led officials to change their minds, ordering mandatory evacuations near the fire by 5:20 p.m.

By 7:30 p.m., CalFire estimated the blaze, named the Sites Fire, at 1,000 acres with zero percent containment.

Firefighters and law enforcement officials were weighing evacuation orders for nearby towns. No word was available on any threatened structures or injuries.
