Police standoff underway at Cupertino donut shop

CUPERTINO – Authorities have surrounded the Donut Wheel in Cupertino, where a theft suspect is holed up.

The episode started about 4:10 p.m. Monday, when Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Staples store at 20830 Stevens Creek Blvd. for a report of a theft, said Sgt. Michael Low. A caller said a male stole about $200 worth of merchandise and became aggressive toward employees.

Low said deputies tried to stop the suspect outside the Staples, but he brandished a knife and ran away toward De Anza Boulevard. He then entered the Donut Wheel.

The suspect is believed to be alone inside the shop, said Low, adding that crisis negotiation and K9 teams are at the scene.

“We are attempting to come to a peaceful resolution,” Low said.
