MORGAN HILL – A motorist died after crashing into a tree on Monday night, police said.

Morgan Hill police said the crash was reported about 11 p.m. on Monterey Road south of Watsonville Road.

First responders worked to free the person from the wreckage, but the person died at the scene, police said. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the person’s name once their identity is confirmed and their next of kin is notified.

Police said an initial investigation found that the motorist was speeding northbound on Monterey Road just prior to the crash. As the vehicle approached Watsonville Road, it left the roadway and crashed head-on into a large tree.

Officers interviewed witnesses at the scene and are trying to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The crash sparked a small vegetation fire, which spread south on the east side of the roadway. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze as it neared several buildings.
