Authorities have detained at least one suspect in fires, ordered residents to evacuate

SAN JOSE – At least one suspect has been detained as crews battle half a dozen intentionally set fires in the Santa Teresa Hills of San Jose, authorities said.

The fires were reported about 5:50 p.m. near Colleen Drive and Chesboro Avenue.

San Jose fire Capt. Brian Palodichuk said the fires were set within two to five miles of each other and total about 45 acres.

“Someone intentionally started it,” said Palodichuk, adding that a suspect was detained.

San Jose police Sgt. Enrique Garcia confirmed that at least one suspect was detained.

The fires are threatening homes in the area, and evacuations have been ordered for all homes west of Graystone Lane to Pfeiffer Ranch and Deer Hollow drives, said Palodichuk.

An evacuation center is open at the Almaden Community Center, 6445 Camden Ave.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection dispatched two air tankers, Palodichuk said, and the Santa Clara County Fire Department is providing assistance.
