The victim was walking in westbound lanes of Curtner Avenue at Canoas Gardens Avenue about 11:25 p.m. Saturday when she was struck by a gold-colored 2000 Dodge Caravan, said San Jose police Officer Gina Tepoorten.

Tepoorten said the victim was rushed to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity once it has been confirmed and her next of kin is notified.

The driver, identified as Esfandiar Nikbakhshtali, was arrested in Santa Clara a short time later, Tepoorten said. He was booked into Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of hit-and-run, driving while under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The death marks the city’s 21st traffic fatality of the year.
