Trader Joe’s coming to Milpitas, finally

MILPITAS — Residents of Milpitas and North San Jose who’ve pined for Pizza Parlano, jonesed for a Joe-Joe’s cream sandwich cookie, and craved Chili & Lime Rolled Corn Tortilla Chips, will finally be indulged.

Trader Joe’s will be opening a store in Milpitas, the company confirmed this week.

“We are planning to bring a Trader Joe’s store to the area and we’re looking forward to beinga part of the neighborhood,” Kenya Friend-Daniel, a company spokeswoman said in an email Thursday.

While the company wouldn’t confirm a location or an expected time frame for opening the store, rumors started swirling online this week when a Reddit user posted a photo of an alcohol sales application notice in the window of what appears to be the new Turing residential mixed-use building off Great Mall Parkway and McCandless Drive.

The application lists 1324 McCandless as the address for Trader Joe’s store 229.

Peter Zak, of Lyon Living, the developer behind Turing confirmed Thursday the store will be in the base of the completed Turing building.

Turing is the first completed phase of The Fields by Lyon Living, which is planned to include 1,185 market-rate apartments and almost 150,000 square feet of retail and a hotel across from The Great Mall.

“Now I don’t have to drive all the way to Coleman. Hopefully this will help reduce the lines for all locations too,” one Reddit user commented on the photo.

Despite past efforts by residents to get a Trader Joe’s in the area, the company told this news organization in 2017 it didn’t have any plans to open a new location between the cities of Fremont and San Jose in the following two years.

San Jose resident Darcy Pinto at the time created an online petition in an attempt to persuade the Monrovia company to open a store in the northeast Santa Clara Valley area, which ended up garnering a little less than 900 signatures.

The popular chain retailer is known for its snacks with catchy names, convenient frozen meals, selection of cheeses, and reasonably-priced bananas, among many other products that keep loyal customers returning to stores.
