Gadsby residents vote to dissolve village

Residents in the Village of Gadsby have voted in favor of becoming a hamlet in the County of Stettler.

A vote was held on Thursday with 27 votes in favor of becoming a hamlet and one vote in favor of remaining a village.

In January, Alberta’s Minister for Municipal Affairs undertook a viability review of the village, upon request from Village of Gadsby Council.

The next step in the viability review process will have the minister recommend the dissolution of the village to the provincial cabinet, who will make the final decision.

“If Cabinet dissolves the municipal corporation, Gadsby will become a hamlet in the County of Stettler, retaining the name and community spirit of Gadsby,” the county says in a release. “The County of Stettler will be the governing body for the purpose of municipal operations and services.”

Gadsby is located along Highway 12, about 27 kilometres east of the town of Stettler (107 km from Red Deer).
