OFF- DUTY POLICE OFFICER FIRES WEAPON AT SUSPECTED SHOPLIFTERS IN MALL GARAGE

Des Peres police are investigating after an off-duty police officer fired a shot a two people who were trying to flee West County Mall for allegedly shoplifting. 

The off-duty police officer told investigators that he witnessed the two stealing and assaulting a store manager who approached the them. The officer tried to stop the suspects from getting away as they were attempting to exit the store. When the suspects reached their vehicle in the mall garage and went to pull off, the suspects ran back into the off-duty cop. 

According to the police, the officer approached the suspects’ vehicle, announced who he was and instructed them to stop running and surrender. The suspects continued to drive away so the officer fired one shot at the vehicle which caused the suspects to crash into a parked car. 

The suspects backed up, then sped out the garage. 

The officer was not charged and the suspects are still on the run.
