Business Spotlight: The Law Firm of Schochor
When you put your trust in a healthcare professional, you expect to be treated with top-quality care. To assure quality care is met, healthcare professionals are required to follow standard protocols put in place by the medical community. Unfortunately, doctors and other trusted professionals make mistakes and, when they do, patients can suffer. At the Law Firm of Schochor, Federico and Staton, we fight on behalf of clients who receive negligent care and suffer injuries and even death as a result.
Sadly, medical malpractice is far more common than it should be. In fact, it is the third leading cause of death in the United States. We believe that is unacceptable, which is one of the reasons why in 1984, we established our law firm to protect clients who had been wronged by medical malpractice. In our almost thirty-five years of operation, we’ve fought hard on behalf of our clients, winning thousands of claims and proudly becoming leaders in the field of Baltimore and Washington D.C.’s medical malpractice attorneys.
When someone is injured or killed after seeking care from a healthcare professional, the Law Firm of Schochor, Federico and Staton, thoroughly investigates and works with medical experts to determine exactly how and why it happened. Our team is made up of experienced attorneys and medical investigators, and we have the resources to take on complex cases and class-action lawsuits. If we determine an injury or death resulted because of negligence or medical malpractice, we’ll do everything in our power to help make sure that the victim or their family is fairly compensated.
Over the years, we’ve filed more medical negligence cases than any other law firm in Maryland. But we don’t just file claims; we win them. In 2015, we achieved the largest class-action settlement involving a single perpetrator in Maryland’s history—a 190 million-dollar settlement for the victims of a gynecologist who secretly photographed his patients during exams. To date, we’ve recovered over a billion dollars for our clients.
Our hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. All five of our senior partners, Jonathan Schochor, Philip Federico, Kerry Staton, Scott Kurlander and James Cardea were selected to be included in the list of Best Lawyers in America. Recently, the Maryland Association for Justice named Founding Partner Jonathan Schochor “Trial Lawyer of the Year.” And in 2014, Best Lawyers named Philip Federico the Baltimore Medical Malpractice Law –Plaintiffs “Lawyer of the Year, an award that was also given to Founding Partner Kerry D. Staton in 2013 and 2018.
Furthermore, the firm was designated the highest rating by Martindale-Hubbell and is also listed in the Bar Register for Preeminent Lawyers. In 2015, we were awarded the Litigator Awards, one of the highest honors in Trial Law. In addition, we earned the highest possible Tier 1 ranking for Medical Malpractice Law – Plaintiffs according to U.S. News – Best Layers “Best Law Firms rankings.
With so much experience and knowledge, our lawyers often teach and give lectures about medical malpractice to members of the legal and medical professions both locally and nationally. This is just one part of our mission to give back to the community. We regularly make generous donations to organizations and charities. In 2017, we donated $50,000 to the Green Street Academy, a charter school that serves hundreds of middle and high-school students in Baltimore. We also make annual donations to organizations to fund research for the cure to cancer, heart disease, and many others.
But despite our success, accolades and philanthropy, our firm is most proud of what we’ve been able to do for our clients. Being the victim of medical malpractice is devastating. It’s our job to bring justice to victims who’ve suffered unnecessarily and help ease their burden, restore their quality of life, and enable them to move forward. This is our passion and what keeps us motivated.
